Blues U18’s v Dragons U18’s

On a cold and damp Sunday afternoon, both Blues and Dragons squads stand in silence, as mark of respect prior to their Regional game at Gwernyfed RFC.

The Dragons with only 12 players, meant the game being played with passive scrums, this did not put off the Blues as within minutes of kick off came their first try from Chloe Smith and converted by Brogan Jones.

A few minutes later saw Blues Captain & Outside half Brogan Jones weave in and out of the Dragons defence, Jones making a cheeky dummy to cross over for a try.. (no conversion on this occasion).

The Dragons showed some quick running ball and came close to the Blues try line, but could not find gaps within the Blues defence....

With the Blues forwards stealing the ball and passing out wide led to the Blues adding a further 33 points and half
time score of 45 - 0. The Blues started the second half in confident mood and with a number of changes made at the interval by coaches Owen and Snape, the second half was again a feast of running rugby which meant Scrum half Aberlery Ruck placing the ball over the Dragons try line with ease, converted by Brogan Jones.

Referee blowing the final whistle some 25 minutes early as the score had reached the 50 pointer mark...

Final Score 52 - 0

Try Scorers: Chloe Smith, Brogan Jones, Bethany Johns, Rebecca Wrigley (2),
Cerys Ballett, Ffion Edmunds, Amerlery Ruck.
Conversions: Brogan Jones (6)
Blues U15’s v Dragons U15’s

A wintery afternoon in November saw Gwernyfed RFC play host to the second game of the regional Competition – after an encouraging start against the Scarlets, the Blues girls were hoping to secure a first win this season.

With conditions perfect for rugby the Blues set up for the kick-off, a deep kick was fielded by the dragons and a first ruck set-up, seemingly spotting something that nobody else had the evasive and speedy Megan Daley took the ball on a long arcing run down the blindside, beating several players on her way and finally dotting down under the posts. The perfect start for the dragons inside two minutes the Blues were left somewhat shell-shocked. The first half was scrappy, the blues having most of the pressure and the territory but failing to connect with the final pass, a lack of go forward and direction plus some excellent scrummaging and rucking from the Dragons kept the visitors firmly ahead in the first half. The Blues Jennie Collins was stand-out in her first half performance for the Dragons!!! , making several big carries and a few strong offloads, she was at the centre of everything good that the dragons produced.

As half time neared the blues squandered a few opportunities to cross the white wash – the final pass never going to hand. Despite dominating the first half the Blues found themselves 5-0 down at.

A half time shuffle saw the pack strengthened, this seemed to have an immediate impact – both at ruck and scrum time. Blues forwards Chloe Mulligan and Jodie Minett produced outstanding second half displays, one in defence and one in attack. Mulligan’s persistence at the tackle area allied with Minett’s go forward with ball in hand provided the blues backs with the clean ball they needed to run the game and run it they did. It what can only be described as a complete second-half turn around, the 9, 10, 12 combination of Jess Pritchard, Megan Jones and Jennie Collins produced a breathtaking display of running and support rugby. Collins’ direct running providing the catalyst for all things good in the second half with Jones always on her should to take the pass. Pritchard’s fast service and quick thinking always a problem for the Dragons team with her snipes and chips probing and asking questions of the defence.

As soon as the Blues managed their first try there was no looking back, a sneaky chip by Pritchard lead to a gather by the fleet-footed Jones who used her pace and quick feet to gather and score under the sticks. This was followed by some excellent phase and interplay by forwards and backs and a try for Martha Setchfield in the left corner. The Blues kept the pressure up and as the match went on the tiring Dragons were overwhelmed by the buoyant Blues, Jones crossing twice more and Collins over for another excellent team score.

In what was a stand-out second-half performance by Megan Jones her ball playing was probably only eclipsed by her kicking display, managing to superbly convert from all angles and finishing with an excellent 4/5 and 23 points – just a shame her legs deserted her for the last play of the match when clean through she was caught from behind!

A superb second half display from the Blues Girls highlighted the rugby skills and teamwork and hopefully sets them up for an exciting final match against the Ospreys in two weeks times.

Forward of the match - Chloe Mulligan
Back of the match - Megan Jones
