FROM THE BEGINNING

WOMEN’S AND GIRLS RUGBY WITHIN THE CARDIFF BLUES REGION HAS A STRONG TRADITION.

HOW WE GOT STARTED

Since the inception of WRU Women’s leagues and cups,
the trophies have been regularly shared between clubs in
the region - Cardiff Quins, Llandaff North, Tylorstown and
UWIC, – indeed two of these clubs, Cardiff Quins and
UWIC are the current strongholds of the game, their sides
containing many Senior and Age Grade Internationals.

In the 2008/09 season, Girls representative rugby moved
away from it’s traditional East, West and North Wales
representative squads, and followed the National WRU
structure of the professional regions (Blues, Dragons,
Ospreys, Scarlets and Gogledd Cymru). This 1st season
proved successful for the Cardiff Blues Region with the U15 squad winning the Welsh tournament and then being invited to attend the National Competition vs the English regions. A fantastic day with memorable standout team performancessaw them victorious and crowned as National Champions 2009.
 

SEASON 2010-11 - Our U18’s proved too strong for many regions and took the Regional Tournament at Llandovery in style…The end of the season saw the U18’s win the WRU Championship.

Both our Senior Women and U15’s Girls played some impressive rugby over the season.

On 30th June this year the WRU announced that there will no longer be regional rugby for girls under 15’s.

Girls rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. Introduction to the sport is usually through schools, with community and club coaches using local and National TAG competitions as an introductory activity. Development is then through introducing contact sessions, again either in preparation for a schools tournament or via accessing local clubs. The next step is then joining and playing for your own club. Talented and committed players can also then trial for the Regional Blues U18’s squad.

I enjoy club rugby, and have loved my time with the Blues u18’s - looking  forward to meeting up at the skills session over the summer.
